There may be numerous reasons for choosing Canada for getting your dream international degree, but the following four reasons stands out significantly.
Believe it or not, immigration is one of the most vital factors for selecting a country for foreign education. You do not want to have countless sleepless nights for bureaucratic quagmire of immigration applications when you should spend time on writing papers for your assignments. Let’s see how Canada is a better country for international students.
Immigration for Student Visa
You can apply for Study permit online in CIC website. Online application process is very straight forward. You should have required documents in scanned format to upload and credit or debit card to pay the visa fees. Before you start the process, you need to have letter of acceptance from a recognized school. You also need to show proof of fund which is about CA$10,000 (CA$11,000 in Quebec) per year. Proof of fund changes frequently so please check the official website to find out the latest amount. It takes about 10-12 weeks to get the application processed.
In US, you need to show proof of liquid assets sufficient to pay for the entire first year of education and living expenses as well as proof of readily available funds to cover the remaining years of the program. Amount of money will depend on the university and the program.
In Australia, you need to show 12 month’s tuition fee and living cost etc. Often this amount is more than CA$10,000.
Working while you study in Canada
Post-secondary students are allowed to work on and off campus 20 hours a week during university semesters and full-time during breaks such as the winter or summer holidays. You do not need a work permit to work while you are studying.
You can work in US while studying but you can do so only after 2 full semesters and the work must be in the same field you are studying. This is called CPT. You need to apply for this work permit.
International students in Australia on a valid student visa can work for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, and there is no limit on the number of hours an international student can work during recognized school vacations. This rule is same as in Canada.
UK also has the same rule as in Canada.
Immigration After Graduation
Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWPP) allows you to work in Canada after you have completed your studies. You can get the open work permit after you graduate if you study from pre-approved list of schools and study at least 8 months full time. Immigration process is a breeze compared to US or UK. Students are even allowed to work while their application for PGWPP is in process. You can utilize this valuable Canadian work experience and apply for Permanent residence through either Express Entry or PNP. Some Canadian province like Manitoba prefers those who have graduated from the same province.
In US, work visa is extremely complex. Most of the students have to go back to their home country because they cannot secure work visa after their graduation. This is a pandora’s box you don’t want to open. Even if you get a work visa, there will be no stability in life as Trump administration is changing rules very quickly.
International students who will study in the UK in or after 2020 will benefit from the new post-study work visa (PSW) for graduates. Students will be able to work for 2 years after graduation.
Australian program also offers 2-4 years of work visa after graduation.
While USA is still holding the top position for international student intake, Canada stands at 4th position. While Trump administration and conservative government in UK are adding more roadblocks to the already pathetic study-based immigration systems, Canada is making it easier for the students to come to Canada and settle down. From 2018 to 2019, Canada has seen 17.45% increase in the international student count.
2. Top Universities in Canada
Canadian Universities are world class. Following table shows the list of Canadian top universities in Global 200 rank as per U.S. News.
Canada offers relatively inexpensive tuition compared to the other English-speaking countries United States, UK, Australia.
Canadian government provides a useful tool to search universities by programs, field of study, cost, city etc.
4. Multicultural Community
Canada has been becoming more multicultural community day by day with the increasing immigration from around the world. According to 2016 Census data via Statistics Canada, over one in five Canadians were born outside Canada, while 22.3% of the Canadian population belonged to visible minorities, of whom 3 in 10 were born in Canada. Although racism does exist, it is very low compared to US or Australia as majority of the Canadians see immigration favorably. So, as an international student, you will blend in easily doesn’t matter which part of the world you come from.
Canada is the 10th largest economy in the world. Per capita income wise Canada ranks at 17th. So, chances are that you have a very good chance of getting your dream job after you finish your study. Although Canadian job market is very stable, job prospect in Canada is pretty good for the following sectors.
Architecture and Engineering
Hospitality and Tourism
I recommend Individuals to research the job prospect for their own field before making any move.
